Vision and Ethos: Crafting to support wellbeing

Building on the ethos laid down by Kevin and Ellen Grimley, The St Joseph’s Rural Centre through Cairn Crafts, is continuing to develop its links between spirituality, wellbeing, and craftwork.

William Morris who is seen by many to be the father of the Craft Movement, encapsulates our ethos regarding crafting in these three quotes:

‘Artists cannot help themselves; they are driven to create by their nature, but for that nature to truly thrive, we need to preserve the precious habitat in which that beauty can flourish.’

‘Art made by the people for the people, as a joy to the maker and the user.’

‘A person at work, making something which they feel will exist because they are working at it and willing it, are exercising the energies of their mind and soul as well as of their body. Memory and imagination help them as they work.’
