Cairn Crafts
Our Story
Founded in 1995, Ellen and Kevin Grimley set out on an adventure into the crafting world that led them to the recognition of the importance of both the aesthetical pleasure that comes through the creative process and viewing of it and the power that the creative process has on the human condition.
In 1996, along with the support of his family, Kevin began leading coracle workshops helping others to build their own coracles, sometimes this included exploring the different spiritual facets of the symbol of the coracle through storytelling, drama, and the audio-visual arts.

From then to the present, as well as providing workshops, Kevin and Ellen have been showing the craft of coracle-making at various shows around the country schools. In 1998, they were approached by Pinewood Studios to make a coracle for a film called ‘Timeline’, starring Anna Friel and Billy Connelly. At the turn of the century, Kevin made coracles for various TV programmes, Coast, Water-world, and Everything Must Go. The most recent TV programme that Kevin has made coracles for is Game of Thrones.

Today, we still hold coracle building workshops along with others such as woodwork, jewellery making, knitting, and crochet classes. We also enjoy supporting others and have built a strong community of local crafters, in all mediums of the art world, many of which, hold workshops and/or sell their creations from our shop at St Joseph’s Charnwood Forest Rural Centre.
Please take a look for dates and details of classes we are holding or while you visit our tearoom, come and have a browse around our shop and purchase that unique/alternative gift.
